Leeann Poulin

I am a recovering people-pleaser who used to live my life for everyone else but myself. When it came to family and friends I never knew how to speak up for myself- to say what I needed, when I felt taken advantage of, or when I was hurt. I thought of others first, which is what I thought I was supposed to do. I would give, and make sure everyone else was happy, but I didn’t take good care of myself. I found out pretty quickly that this leads to feeling burned out, stressed, resentful, and angry. This is not who I wanted to be so I started to take some steps to becoming stronger and less worried about what other people think. I started to prioritize taking care of myself, so I can give from a place of love and health, instead of emptiness and exhaustion. I have learned to have difficult conversations, express what I need and when I’m upset, and ultimately get to a healthier and happier place in my life. When I didn’t confront issues and speak up for myself, I wound up stressed and sick. Little issues became bigger issues because they weren’t addressed or resolved. I was too busy because I said yes to everything asked of me. I was running myself into the ground.

I found that by speaking up I was able to have time for what I valued, I could say no to things that didn’t work for me, I could express my emotions and not keep everything bottled up, and I was not feeling stressed and burned out like before. Now I work to empower other women to find their voice and get to that healthier place in their own lives. It’s hard to work through the fear that stops us from speaking up, but it’s possible and it’s totally worth it.
